  • July 2018: $44.3 billion, passing Jack Ma to become Asia's richest person.[2]
  • March 2026: $99.7 billion, 21st on the Forbes list.[1]

How the fortune was made

Ambani was born in Aden (now in Yemen), the son of Dhirubhai Ambani, who founded Reliance Industries.[2] He studied at St. Xavier's College and the Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai, and left Stanford University's business school in 1980 to join Reliance.[2] At 24 he was put in charge of building the Patalganga petrochemical plant.[2] He expanded the company's energy business and led the building of its refinery at Jamnagar, which could process 660,000 barrels a day in 2010 and was the world's largest built from scratch.[2]

His family lives in Antilia, a 27-storey private building in Mumbai valued at $1 billion, the most expensive home in the world when it was built.[2]
